Call to Me

In the last week of April 2009, a group of five church leaders met in the Anglican church in Chipata, capital of Zambia’s Eastern Province.  Their mission: to draft a set of Bible studies on issues related to HIV and AIDS for the Strategies for Hope toolkit, ‘Called to Care’.  By the end of the week they had drafted 12 Bible studies on topics such as healing; stigma and discrimination; healing; church leadership; and sexual harassment and gender violence.

Over the following six months groups of people in Ghana, South Africa and Tanzania developed another eight Bible studies on topics related to the AIDS epidemic.  The whole collection has now been published by the Strategies for Hope Trust, under the title ‘Call to Me: how the Bible speaks in the age of AIDS’.  It was fitting, therefore, that the launch ceremony was held in Chipata, where the first writers’ workshop took place.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Rt Rev William Mchombo, Anglican Bishop of Eastern Zambia, said: “I sincerely commend this book to all who are concerned about the AIDS epidemic and are involved in responding to its many challenges.  And remember to go for VCT, for your own sakes.”

Call to Me is no. 7 in the Called to Care toolkit, which is designed for use by churches, faith-based organisations, NGOs and community groups, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Full details, please click here.
