Under the Mupundu Tree

Volunteers in home care for people with HIV/AIDS and TB in Zambia's Copperbelt

1999; 35 minutes with original music by Zambian group Distro Kuombokop. Available in English, French and Swahili.

Most countries in sub-Saharan Africa now face the challenge of a devastating dual epidemic of HIV/AIDS and TB. Under the Mupundu Tree addresses the question of how these countries, which are beset by economic decline and rising levels of poverty, can address the needs of the millions of people who are affected by this dual epidemic.

This video shows how volunteers play a frontline role in HIV/AIDS care and support and TB control in low-income townships of Zambia’s Copperbelt. Over 500 volunteers - most of whom are women - are the key to the success of the programme. The video depicts their day-to-day activities, explores their motivation and examines the problems they face. It includes numerous interviews with volunteers and the families they visit.

Under the Mupundu Tree demonstrates how TB control and home care for people with HIV/AIDS can have a powerful and mutually reinforcing impact. It will be extremely useful with groups of health and development workers, community leaders, women’s organisations, voluntary groups and religious bodies.

“The reason I do this work is I just give myself up to work for people ... I just give my heart to do this work.”
Regina, health volunteer, Nkwazi township, Ndola, Zambia
